Soan Dam: Bright future of Pakistan

I have to jump to a different topic today. After that we will go back to our regular topics list, to resume the general learning curve.
I have published this topic in Urdu to soften the sudden jump of concepts.

Back in 2010, I designed a detailed flood control system for Pakistan, to tame and harvest super floods. It includes several proposed sites for large scale water storage. I presented it at govt level in Pakistan in Jan 2011.

two years later, it is elections season and I feel that people of Pakistan have a right of awareness and discussion over this topic.
Back in December 2012, media wasted a whole month of prime air time about Lahore High court's decision on Kalabagh dam. They need better topics.

I am not sure if it will get due attention in next 4-5 weeks, but I have to do my part.
I will publish seversal posts on this topic, including video and some technical details.

[update on 6/6/2013] Elections are over with new govt in place now. I guess WAPDA already knows and remembers Soan dam, but govt. and media needs to pay some attention to ideas like this in middle of shambled economy and prevailing hopelessness.
This is much better option than IMF/WB bail-outs or foreign aid.

Here is urdu summary of the project.

    1. Read the design details once again. For Sindh, this project can reserve 10 MAF for delta flow around the year, Improve water quality in low flow season, Save mega floods and increase winter water by 60%, and provide abundant water for kharif sowing season.

Still if Sindh doesn't like it, there is no compulsion, and Punjab can build the half capacity design with single link canal, to divert its flood water share, and it will help KPK and Balochistan too.

  14. hi, is there any analysis of how many people would have to be relocated because of this project?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Relocating least people is a major design consideration. for others, Inshallah more than a fair deal is under compilation including alternate land, housing, water credit, model towns, villages and model farms in a transparent and organized way.

    1. Can't blame them. Kalabagh's design doesn't offer them very positive features. Soan offers much more, let's see if they decide to trust and join the project, or stay away from it. project Is flexible enough to be built with or without Sindh's participation.

    1. Thnks Dear Imran, Project will definitely need detailed surveying during detailed design stage.
btw, how much will it cost for LIDAR and Bathymetric Survey of Indus river-bed between Attock and Kalabagh?

  25. Can you please tell me if any province will be deprived of its share of water? Will equitable share of water be ensured? Will the wild life of Indus; the blind dolphins be affected by water storage? What sort of problems if any can crop up and if they can be fairly dealt with?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Soan Dam will fix the existing delay in summer melt due to Dams, barrages and diversions in Punjab, KPK and India. Indus delta will get about 20000 cusecs flow around the year. apart from that Sind will get an extra share of about 10 MAF Due to Carry-over capability, Sindh will be able to use any amount of water share at any time around the year according to its cropping schedule needs. ensured base flow in river and delta will help the wildlife including the blind dolphins and Palla.

  26. And the crops grown in lower Sindh region will not be affected?

  27. Q1. terbela ka dead level 418 hai jaha, Terbela sy ek canal nikali jae gi Soan dam mai pani divert krny k lia, jab k soan reservoir pondage 300 sy 400 meters hoga is ka matalb jab tak barishain nhi hoti soan dam fill nhi hoga ya phir jab tak terbela ka dead level nhi hoga jab tak pani canal k zariye soan reservoir tak nhi pohanchaya ja sakta hai?????

Q2. Terbela k pani ka ikhraaj 2 taraf sy hoga ek reservoir or 2nd soan ko pani supply karny wali canal, jis mai reservoir sy pani indus river mai or canal sy pani soan dam mai jaya kary ga.. matlab ye howa k Terbela sy electricity Generate karny ki Salahiyaat or bhi kam hojae gi????? ya phir Terbela ka maqsad sirf water diversion k liye hi reh jae ga??

Q3. Agar Terbela ka maqsaad sirf water diversion krnay k lia hi reh jae ga tu kiya KPK ko pani supply karny k liye Terbela sy hi ek or canal nhi nikali jasakti hai jo KPK ko pani supply kary???? bajae is k saon dam mai pehly pani aaye or phir KPK mai supply kiya jae.... (kiyo k jab tak terbela ka dead level nhi hoga jab tak canal k zariye soan dam mai pani divert nhi kiya sakay ga.. jis ki waja sy KPK mai Soan dam sy pani ki suppy mai rukawat ya deer lagay gi)...

    ReplyDelete
  28. Q4. Agar ye mumkin hai k KPK ko bhi pani ki supply k lia terbela dam sy hi ek canal nikal li jae tu kiya os k baad ye mumkin hoga k KPK ko flood sy bachany k lia KPK wali canal temporary band kr di jae taky pani Terbela mai dead level tak bharny k baad soan dam wali canal k zariye soan dam mai divert ho???? (i think ye mumkin ho sakta hai).

Q5. Meray khiyaal say soan dam sy KPK ko Maan Chaha pani nhi mil sakta hai, han shayaad southern KPK ki zamino ko tu mil sakta hai is lia behtar yehi hoga k Terbela sy ek or canal KPK ko water supply kary???? kiyo k soan dam sy kPK ko water supply karny k beech mai indus river ya river sindh Aaata hai or soan dam kesi River k Ouper bhi nhi bany ga.. is lia Soan Dam sy beech mai indus river ya river sindh(downstream) ki honay ki waja sy KPK(upstream) ko pani supply karny mai mushkil peda kr sakta hai... is lia meri request hai k terbela sy hi ek or canal ho KPK ko water supply karny k lia or flood ki sorat mai ye canal band bhi ki jasaky taky soan dam wali canal sy pani divert kr k soan dam mai muntakil kiya jae. Yo Soan Dam flood control karny k lia behtreen sabit hoga????? or barish ka pani zaya honay k bajae save bhi hoga...

Q6. Agar abhi tak mery Q5 tak k sawal theek hain tu is ka matlab ham panjab, sindh k elawa bhi KPK ko Na Sirf maan chaha pani dy saktay hain balkay panjab, sindh,KPK ko flood sy bhi bacha sakty hain .. or agar meri baat theek hai tu is ka matlab ham kalabagh dam bhi kaam bulandi tak bana sakty hain jesy 800, 700 ya 600 ft taky flood control system mai or bhi ziada jaan ajae or apka mazeed pani bhi store hosakay or electricity bhi generate ho??? kiyo k Terbela ka kaam jab water divert krna hi reh jae ga tu os k badlay ki electricity kalabagh Pori kar lay ga. or koe city dobnay ka khatra bhi nhi hoga kalabagh ki kaam bulandi ki waja sy...

Q7. Soan Dam k sath kalabagh dam kam bulandi tak banany ka ye faida hoga k barish ho ya na ho flood aaye ya nhi aaye ham soan dam k elawa bhi indus river or kabul river sy Aany wala pani kalabagh dam mai kaam bulandi tak save kr sakty hain or electricity bhi genrate kr sakty hain???? (is tarah jaab soan dam mai pani k kami hogi tu kalabagh dam faida dy ga)

My Request: Soan Dam ko water supply karny wali canal jabhi open ki jae jab flood ka khatra ho taky terbela reservior bhi electricity genrate kar saky or jab pani terbela sy kalabagh dam mai pohanchy tu waha bhi electricity genrate ho.... or kalabagh dam sy aagay pani sindh k lia river sindh mai jasakay..

Is Tarah sy apka pani circulate rahy ga matlab flood ki sorat mai terbela sy soan dam or jab flood ki sorat nhi ho tu terbela sy direct kalabagh dam indus river sy hoty howy..

or ye is lia bhi k jab Afghanistan kabul River per Dam or india jehlaam or chenaab per dam banaly ga tu hamary paas behtareen alternate hoga

Aaqaal mand wohi hai jo achi baat Aapna ly or Buri baat jany dy..

I know kahi na kahi mai ny mistake ki hogi but plz reply must
